Things to do in Playa Blanca

Playa Blanca, the Jewel of Lanzarote

Playa Blanca is a fishing village that in recent years has become the tourist centre of the Municipality of Yaiza.

Its beaches, which have been awarded the Blue Flag of the European Community for their crystal-clear waters and accessible infrastructure, are accompanied by a wide range of hotels, restaurants and shops, making it one of the most important beach tourist areas in Lanzarote.

Playa Blanca has an extensive promenade that surrounds its different beaches and also includes two very important ports. The Maritime Port, which provides access to tourist and transport boats for local users, and the Marina Rubicón Sports Port, which is visited by a large number of visitors from all over the world.

In addition to the urban area, Playa Blanca has places that are a must-see, such as Playa Papagayo, Los Charcones, Los Ajaches or the Pechiguera Lighthouse.

In Playa Blanca there is the Tourist Office, which has multilingual staff and information material about our Municipality, such as maps and guides with various activities in the main languages of our visitors.

Playa del Papagayo. The most beautiful beach in Lanzarote

The Playa de Papagayo is considered one of the best beaches in Spain and is, without a doubt, a true paradise. This bay is known for its white sand beach and emerald waters, which create the perfect contrast.

Playa de Papagayo is located in the Natural Monument of Los Ajaches, along with other coves, each one more beautiful than the last, and many of them nudist. From Playa Blanca it takes about 20 minutes to get there by car, with a final section of 4 kilometers on a dirt road. To enter this park and visit its different beaches you will have to pay €3 per vehicle.

If you don't want to drive, this tour leaves from Playa Blanca, which will allow you to explore the coast by kayak and snorkel to explore the marine life in the area. With a bit of luck you'll see everything from starfish and fish of different colors to manta rays.

But, if you prefer, you can also book this excursion, to reach Papagayo by sailboat along the coast from Playa Blanca in Lanzarote.

Playa Dorada

Located 1 km from Villa Atlántica, Playa Dorada is the most beautiful beach in Playa Blanca. It is characterized by its calm, turquoise waters and extensive white sand. It is a good place to visit in Playa Blanca if you are traveling with children or if you feel like swimming in the sea, since there are hardly any waves, thanks to its horseshoe shape.

In the centre there is a small stone island, which with Fuerteventura and Isla de Lobos in the background, on clear days, will create a unique postcard.

Many of the resorts are located in this area, and as well as being beautiful, it has all the services so that you don't lack anything to enjoy your day at the beach: lifeguards, showers, toilets, beach bars, umbrellas and more.

Playa Flamingo

Playa Flamingo is an artificial beach that is also in the heart of Playa Blanca, and surrounded by restaurants, beach bars and shops. This cove of golden sand and turquoise waters is one of the essential places to visit in Playa Blanca in Lanzarote if you are travelling with children.

The peculiarity of this 200-metre long beach is that it is protected by two breakwaters, which makes the waters practically completely calm and, at the same time, perfect for snorkelling.

Visibility is usually very good, which is why it is also popular for scuba diving from the sand itself. By diving a couple of metres you will be able to see all kinds of marine creatures.

Los Charcones, Natural Pools

Los Charcones are the perfect place for those looking for a less crowded option than the beaches I mentioned above. This set of natural pools in Lanzarote is formed when the tide rises and fills the different corners of this volcanic relief with water.

If you visit them at high tide you won't see them, as they are under the waves, so check a tide table to see when is the best time of day to visit them during your trip.

Getting to Los Charcones and finding them is not an easy task. They are 20 minutes from the center of Playa Blanca and the road, full of potholes and volcanic stone, is not well signposted. The only reference is the abandoned hospital near Montaña Roja, west of the Pechiguera lighthouse.

The best pools are to the north of this hospital, so put on some good water shoes and go looking for them, as it is undoubtedly one of the most impressive things to see in Playa Blanca.

Marina Rubicón.

If you are looking for a place to take a walk along the sea, see different luxury boats and yachts, walk along some beautiful wooden walkways or go out to party in one of the best clubs in Lanzarote, the Marina Rubicón is something you have to visit in Playa Blanca.

This area of Playa Blanca is also known for the market that is set up on Wednesday and Saturday mornings, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., where a wide variety of local products and crafts are offered. If you are looking for original souvenirs as a memento of your vacation, you already know where to find them.

Climbing the Montaña Roja volcano

Another typical activity in Playa Blanca is to hike to the crater of the Montaña Roja volcano, the southernmost volcano in Lanzarote. This 4-kilometer hiking route is something to do in Playa Blanca if you are looking for adventure and direct contact with nature.

The path that leads to the Montaña Roja is of low difficulty and will allow you to discover a very different environment. The path zigzags along the slope composed of lava and volcanic ash, which mostly give the mountain a desert and desolate air. Let yourself be melted by the black and reddish tones of the stone until the top, to turn around and enjoy the blue of the Atlantic. Views of Isla de Lobos and Fuerteventura are also guaranteed.

After stopping to admire the landscape, focus on the enormous crater of this volcano, about 350 meters in diameter. You will understand why it is a must-see in Playa Blanca. In fact, from the top you will have the best views of all of Playa Blanca and beyond. You will even be able to see the peaks of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument from the 200 meters high you will find yourself at.

Atlantic Museum of Lanzarote

Playa Blanca is the ideal place for diving, and the Atlantic Museum is an underwater art gallery that you will undoubtedly enjoy very much if you are a fan of this sport.

If you dare to live this adventure, you will be able to see different sculptures by the artist Jason de Caires Taylor, which are surrounded by native fauna and flora. You can also book this tour, one of the best excursions in Lanzarote, which includes three dives with a guide so you don't miss this must-see place in Playa Blanca.

Castillo de las Coloradas

The Castillo de las Coloradas, also known as Torre del Águila or Castillo de San Marcial de Rubicón, is an old fortress and one of the most typical things to see in Playa Blanca. It was built to protect the city from pirate attacks, but today it is simply a beautiful place from which to contemplate the best sunsets in Lanzarote.

Due to its state and in order to preserve it, access is not permitted. Even so, it is worth visiting, since the whole area has a wild and particular atmosphere that manages to captivate tourists who want to take beautiful photographs and enjoy wonderful views.

The Castillo de las Coloradas is, without a doubt, a symbol of the city and one of the essential things to see in Playa Blanca.

Aqualava

A must-see in Playa Blanca for those traveling with children is to visit the Aqualava water park.

This theme park in Playa Blanca has several attractions, such as a wave pool, an artificial river where you can play with floats of different sizes, and slides of different lengths and inclinations. The decor of this water park is inspired by the island's volcanoes, but it's still one of the best places to cool off when the sun is beating down.

On colder days, though, don't worry, as this award-winning water park, surprisingly, heats its waters with geothermal energy from the interior of the volcanic lands.

If you want to spend a fun day with your family, I recommend booking your ticket in advance.
